Hi, I’m David, and although I specialise in nightlife, it’s important to remember that Budapest has plenty of exciting things to do during the day too. For example, St. Stephen’s Basilica and its surroundings are a must if you want to admire the city’s architectural masterpieces and enjoy culinary delights at the same time.
I’m already writing about why I love the Basilica and its surroundings.
- The stunning architecture.
- The lively atmosphere: the area around the Basilica is always bustling with life. A mix of tourists and locals, the smells wafting from the terraces of cafés, the melodies of street musicians – this is the real Budapest atmosphere.
- The culinary delights. From traditional Hungarian cuisine to international flavours, you will find everything.
- The pedestrian streets and shops. Zrínyi Street and the surrounding small streets are full of charming shops selling gifts, handicrafts and fashionable clothes.
Be sure to do these if you’re passing by..
- Visit the Basilica and admire the interior.
- Climb up to the dome and enjoy the panoramic view.
- Walk along Zrínyi Street and check out the charming shops.
- Sample the local specialities at one of the restaurants.
- Sit in a café and enjoy the atmosphere.
- Check out the square in front of the Basilica, where events are often held.
- In winter, the square hosts a Christmas market with delicious food and drinks (a personal favourite of mine).
Tips for exploring the area around the Basilica:
- It is worth visiting in the morning or early afternoon when it is less crowded.
- Try as many restaurants and cafes as possible to find your favourites.
- Check out the small streets for hidden treasures.
- If you like handmade goods, visit the local markets.
- Near the Basilica you’ll find the gelarto rosa ice cream parlour, where you can get rose-shaped ice cream.
St Stephen’s Basilica and its surroundings is a place where history, culture and gastronomy meet in perfect harmony. If you want an elegant and memorable experience, this is the place for you!
